THE CRISIS.
Goma’s Families Face Unimaginable Loss – A Crisis Ignored
CONTEXT.
In Eastern Congo, families endure a daily battle for survival. A mother cradles her child, hoping Ubuntu Heart or other grassroots organisations will provide a meal at Kyeshero Hospital’s field kitchen. An elderly woman, her tent in Bulengo camp destroyed by M23 rebels, clutches a tattered blanket. These are not distant tragedies—they are the reality for over 10 million displaced people in Congo, half of them children, whose lives have been further shattered since M23’s January 2025 assault.
A CRISIS OF CRUELTY.
M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, issued a 72-hour ultimatum forcing displaced families to leave camps—driving thousands into villages reduced to ash. “They told us to go home, but our home is rubble,” says a mother of four now sleeping under trees.
The Human Toll.
-
Over 12,000 lives lost in just three days during M23’s January offensive, with bodies left unburied on Goma’s streets
-
Hospitals overwhelmed: Kyeshero Hospital treats 300+ patients daily, many with war injuries. “We’ve run out of bandages. Children lie on floors,” reports a nurse.
Families torn apart: Over 78,000 children displaced since February, many separated from parents. “I held my son’s hand… then the bombs came,” shares a father still searching.
